FAQs

What are GRI standards?

The GRI Standards are a set of modular, interrelated standards that enable organizations to report publicly on their economic, environmental, and social impacts. They are designed to enhance global comparability and quality of information, thereby enabling greater transparency and accountability.

Who should use GRI standards?

The GRI Standards are applicable to organizations of all sizes and sectors worldwide. They are used by multinational organizations, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), governments, NGOs, and industry groups to disclose their sustainability performance.

Are GRI standards mandatory?

The adoption of GRI Standards is voluntary. However, many organizations choose to use them to demonstrate transparency and accountability in their sustainability reporting. In some regions, regulatory requirements may encourage or mandate sustainability reporting, and organizations often use GRI Standards to comply with such requirements.

How to GRI standards benefit organisations?

Utilizing the GRI Standards helps organizations identify and manage their impacts on the economy, environment, and society. This can lead to improved stakeholder trust, better risk management, and enhanced reputation. Additionally, it facilitates benchmarking and comparison across organizations and industries.

How are the GRI standards structured?

The GRI Standards are structured into three series:

Universal Standards: Apply to all organizations and cover core sustainability issues related to a company’s impact on the economy, society, and the environment.

Sector Standards: Apply to specific sectors, particularly those with the highest environmental impact, such as Oil and Gas, Coal, and Agriculture, Aquaculture, and Fishing.

Topic Standards: List disclosures relevant to a particular topic area, such as Waste, Occupational Health and Safety, Biodiversity, Energy, Diversity, and Equal Opportunity.

How ca an organisation get started with GRI reporting?

Organizations can begin by reviewing the GRI Standards available on the GRI website and identifying the disclosures relevant to their operations. Engaging with stakeholders to determine material topics is a crucial step. Organizations may also consider participating in GRI's training programs or consulting with experts to effectively implement the Standards.
